A Trubute from Kenilworth Golf Club

Created by Philip 13 days ago

It is with much regret and sadness that we advise members that Jim Dean passed away on Friday 29th March at the age of 91. Jim was well known at Kenilworth Golf Club and many members and staff will mourn the loss of a good friend and great supporter of the Club and its activities.

Jim (affectionately known as Jimmy) was Kenilworth Golf Club through and through. He arrived in the local area in 1956 from Glasgow and joined KGC at that time. Jim honed his golfing prowess in Scotland at Milngavie GC and was playing off a handicap of 6 when he arrived in the Midlands. Jim devoted much time to the workings of the Club over a period of some 40 years. He was a Director for many years, Captain (1981) and became an Honorary Member in 1997. One of Jim's major inputs to the operation of the Club was his long service on the Match and Competitions Committee where his Chairmanship spanned the period from 1978-1999.

In addition to his excellent contribution to KGC Jim was heavily involved with the Warwickshire Union of Golf Clubs as their Treasurer and then President in 2004. He also had the accolade of being invited to be President of the Midlands EGU (2008-2010).
Jim continued to enjoy his golf throughout his long association with Kenilworth GC. He continued to play off single figures through five decades and his achievements included winning the Prentice Trophy, the Philpot Salver, Gerard Cup and the Joe Gardner Trophy. He was also a Dunlop Masters Pro Am winner in 1982.

Jim's legacy at Kenilworth can also be observed on the course. He was instrumental in the introduction of the conifer planting on the course having negotiated a deal with the Forestry Commission for the provision of trees. At the time this became known as
"The Forest of Dean". Jim was also involved in the reconstruction of the 2nd, 5th and 15th greens.

Jim will be sadly missed by many members who have known him and his legacy will live on as someone who has devoted much time to the benefit of the Club and its members.

Our sincere condolences go to jim's family.
